Superstitions

- how is fear of the number thirteen demonstarted?
More than 80 percent of high-rises lack a 13th floor.
Many airports skip the 13th gate.
Airplanes have no 13th aisle.
Hospitals and hotels regularly have no room number 13.
Italians omit the number 13 from their national lottery.
On streets in Florence, Italy, the house between number 12 and 14 is addressed as 12 and a half.
Many cities do not have a 13th Street or a 13th Avenue
In France, socialites known as the quatorziens (fourteeners) once made themselves available as 14th guests to keep a dinner party from an unlucky fate.
Many triskaidekaphobes, as those who fear the unlucky integer are known, point to the ill-fated mission to the moon, Apollo 13.
If you have 13 letters in your name, you will have the devil's luck . Jack the Ripper, Charles Manson, Jeffrey Dahmer, Theodore Bundy and Albert De Salvo all have 13 letters in their names.

Here is my attempted Rebus. I'm not entirely sure if it's correct but i've given it a go

Intangible Symboleopyw

The copyright symbol is an example of an intangible symbol because it has been created to be recognised internationally so that all people are aware of it's meaning and therefore it would not be changed.

Philosophical symbol

In Chinese philosophy, the concept of yin yang is used to describe how polar or seemingly contrary forces are interconnected and interdependent in the natural world, and how they give rise to each other in turn. The outer circle represents "everything", while the black and white shapes within the circle represent the interaction of two energies, called "yin" (black) and "yang" (white), which cause everything to happen. They are not completely black or white, just as things in life are not completely black or white.

Revolutionary symbol

the black power fist is an example of a symbol who's use is for revolutionary purposes. The symbol uses a raised fist which represents regarded as an expression of solidarity, strength or defiance. It is used in the movement among people of Black African descent throughout the world, though primarily by African Americans in the United States. Most prominent in the late 1960s and early 1970s, the movement emphasised racial pride and the creation of black political and cultural institutions to nurture and promote black collective interests and advance black values.

This is a symbol that I have created to represent sound. It has been created by combining already existing symbols (such as the arrows and the ear) in order to create a new one. I think that this would be successful in being a symbol because it is simple and may be read very fast, although it does rely a little bit on the user having to already know what the symbols that are being used are.

Poster

This is the poster I have designed for this weeks task. The main concept is the association with clean breathing getting active and getting out and utilising green space's which in turn will have a positive affect on the individual. And so i have e done this by arranging trees to appear as lungs.
here are a few of the pixel portraits we had to create.

green space symbols

my symbol ideas for the green space project...

symbols that have changed meaning

instantly when thinking of a symbol that has changed its meaning over time i thought of the crusifix.

crucifix.jpg

The cross as a Christian symbol or "seal" came into use at least as early as the second century and the marking of a cross upon the forehead and the chest was regarded as a talisman against the powers of demonsthe crucifix is a symbol for Jesus' resurrection on the cross. But over time the meaning of this symbol has changed...

intergalactic road signs

this week we had to create a series of road signs for an uknown culture. Using my knowledge of symbols i chose to create my road signs for an inter galactic context. i enjoyed this as it gave us the chance to ignore our knowledge of current road sign and create something completely different yet still sticking to the rule of keeping the symbol simple.

Groups

This week we had to research particular groups that identify themselves to the public. Here are a few examples of what i have found...

Directional symbols

this week we had to find 5 symbols that directed an audience to a particular destination (without using arrows). When looking for such examples I immediately thought of symbols that direct where people are going or their actions, such as washing their hands or to the destination of a phone booth. Here are a few examples...

The tangram is a dissection puzzle consisting of seven flat shapes, called tans, which are put together to form shapes. The objective of the puzzle is to form a specific shape (given only in outline or silhouette) using all seven pieces, which may not overlap.
